This story made me cry. I work as a Death Midwife, and am all too aware that it is not only older folks that die and need their choices honoured. All blessings to Persis for honouring her daughter's interest (and willingness) to do an Advance Directive, and then honouring her daughter's wishes from it -- hard as it might have been for her.

I agree with Kathy's comments. Both of my parents wanted their wishes known before there were advanced directives. Their doctors knew their wishes . I knew their wishes. ICU and CCU's were in their beginning stages at that time. They did not have the heroic interventions they said they did not want. My mother would have been a charter member of C&C if we're in existence at that time. I was an RN in an acute care setting. Much was done to a patient with technology that they did not want, but were too sick to argue.

Beautiful!!!! I have been a critical care nurse for 27 years and I have watch many atrocities over the years and I have been heart sick by each one. I have asked many families how they would feel lying in that bed in a near death state due to all of the fancy and progressive equipment we can pile on. Before all of this high tech gear people were allowed to die at home surrounded by their family. Now they are hooked up to every machine imaginable and cared for by strangers. It is truly a nightmare for the patient who was to move on but has been prevented from doing so by our arrogance that we as mere mortals know what is best. ICU's and CCU's have become modern day torture chambers!
