This is a beautiful reflection of issues about death phobia raised at the C&C conference. As in so many things, a paradigm shift is needed in our culture to become more easy with death: to see it, as Jenkinson says, as our angel, not our executioner.

Your observation of death phobia is very accurate. I just heard a radio interview with a doctor who spoke eloquently of the suffering brought on by futile treatments, but then finished up by declaring his vehement opposition to assisted suicide, stating that it was sufficient to have aides available to change diapers quickly. There can be such a refusal to understand that a person might just not want to live in such a diminished and dependent condition.

It seems we have entered a new era of self-justifying denial of death. You are to be commended for your realistic and compassionate stand.
