Compassion & Choices Board of Directors

Van Zandt Williams, Jr., Chairman
Van Zandt Williams, Jr. is Vice President for Development Emeritus from Princeton University, having retired from that position in February of 2002 after 22 years leading the University’s fund raising operations.  He and his wife Myra divide their time between Princeton, New Jersey and Naples, Florida.  He serves on the Boards of the McCarter Theatre of Princeton, the Princeton Area Community Foundation, Compassion and Choices and the National Advisory Council for DeVry University.

Debbi Gibbs
Debbi has been actively involved with Compassion & Choices for four years. She takes her strength for the movement from the women in her family. Her grandmother spent the last few months of her life distributing copies of Elisabeth Kubler Ross’ book On Death and Dying and preparing for a good death from the effects of cancer. Growing up, Ms. Gibbs watched her mother fight for women’s reproductive rights. She was actively involved for three years on the Compassion & Choices New York board and now co-chairs the national Development Committee. Ms. Gibbs lives in New York with her family and manages record producers.

Gary Ivens, J.D.
After graduating from Harvard Law School, Gary practiced law at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson and Howrey & Simon, both in Washington, D.C. Gary joined the staff of the Federal Trade Commission in late 1994 and his practice has concentrated mainly on litigating cases to halt fraud against consumers and on serving as the coordinator of the Do Not Call Rule. Gary has served on various boards and committees, including, among others, the Board of Trustees of the Endowment for Divestiture, the Legal Services Operating Committee and the Development Steering Committee of the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C., the Schools Committee of the Harvard Club of D.C., the Board of Directors of the Potomac Executive Network, and the District of Columbia Board of Appeals and Review. He has also been involved in various pro bono legal efforts on behalf of homeless families.

Sylvia A. Law, J.D.
Sylvia is the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law, Medicine and Psychiatry at the New York University School of Law, and co-director of the Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Program. He is now on the full-time faculty in the Division of General Medicine, and the majority of his clinical teaching responsibilities involve home visits with the Visiting Doctors Program.

Matthew has supported end-of-life Choice and our organization for many years. His passion comes from being close to many people who experienced painful deaths and wanting a “more graceful transition out of this world” for his mother, his loved ones and himself. Mr. Nelson, an ordained United Church of Christ minister, currently is the community relations manager for Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis, Minn. As a board member, he will lend his many years of fund-raising experience to build a solid long-term financial base.
