Compassion & Choices Volunteer Opportunities

The work of Compassion & Choices would be impossible without the dedicated efforts of volunteers.  We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities based upon your interest and our needs.

Community Outreach Volunteer

Compassion & Choices local groups are a crucial component of our organization. Much of the work we do is accomplished through grassroots efforts by our members and volunteers who generously give their time to support and strengthen their own communities.  A few examples of what our volunteers do are listed below.
Join an existing or start a new local group

  • Scan newspaper for end-of-life choices stories
  • Send letters to the editor
  • Sign up for our “Action Alerts” that will inform you of pressing legal issues that can affect end of life choices.
  • Distribute referral cards
  • Find groups who might be interested in a speaker
  • Monitor community calendars for speaking opportunities

If you are interested in becoming involved in a local effort please contact us by email or call us toll free at 800.247.7421 to find out more.

End-of-Life Consultation

We currently have 130 End-of-Life Consultation (EOLC) Volunteers in 26 states.  Volunteers are trained to work directly with individual clients who live within their communities and help them: effectively navigate the health care system, gain access to effective palliative and hospice care, complete advance medical directive, and to stay in charge of their own dying. Volunteers work as members of a local team of like-minded individuals; they are expected to regularly attend monthly meetings and commit to at least one year of service following a 3 day training provided by national counselors.  Volunteers must have a reliable means of transportation and be able to work with clients outside of normal business hours.

The role of an EOLC volunteer is fairly challenging work – both physically and emotionally. We seek individuals who have professional or life experiences that equip them to work comfortably with dying clients and their families.

If you are interested in becoming an EOLC Volunteer please contact us by email or call us toll free at 800.247.7421 to find out more.

Advocacy Volunteer/Online Community Builder

Do you have some free time?  Are you comfortable surfing the internet? Do you enjoy reading and commenting on blogs? Do you like to write?  Compassion & Choices needs your help.

We’re looking for a handful of individuals who would enjoy volunteering under the direction of Compassion & Choices Online Community Builder, Carla Axtman.  You’ll get an email every day or two with a list of websites to visit and some information about aid-in-dying, Compassion & Choices and other issues surrounding end-of-life choice.  As a volunteer, you’ll be able to contribute to our movement by commenting on blogs, message boards and other sites about dignity, choice and liberty at the end of life.

If you are interested in becoming an Online Community Builder please contact us by email or call us toll free at 800.247.7421 to find out more.

Other Ways to Volunteer

Fundraisers and Friendraisers include people who are willing to hold house parties and assist in organizing events.  Or if you wanted to start out smaller, how about hosting a coffee hour or similar get-together to meet others in your community.

Interns are student volunteers who work on specific projects that include data entry and mailings.

Administrative Support volunteers spend time at a local or national Compassion & Choices office assisting in day-to-day operations, such as preparing materials for distribution or planning an event or special project.

If you are interested in any of the opportunities above, or have a suggestion of another way you’d like to volunteer please contact us by email or call us toll free at 800.247.7421.
