Compassion & Choices Central North

Carolina covers the greater Triangle area (including Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Lee, Orange, and Wake counties).

We have public meetings twice a year or oftener, as interest and subjects merit: some topics of recent meetings have been the Duke Community Hospice program, advance directives, and an overview of the Compassion & Choices Client Support program. For more information, or to be put on our mailing list, contact contact Ursula Capewell, (919) 542-6199, uhcapewell@msn.com

End-of-life choice activities in this area date from the 1990's, when Eve Segal organized a chapter of the Hemlock Society. Later, Lang and Dorothy Prouty sponsored local meetings in the area and distributed a state newsletter. For reasons of health and age, the Proutys had to give up this leadership role and there were no meetings in the Triangle for a period of time. In 2004, Frank Sargent and Edna Wilson began efforts to reactivate a local group, holding an organizational meeting at The Forest at Duke in November 2004. They contacted many members in the Triangle area and found a high level of interest. The first public meeting was held in Chapel Hill on April 10, 2005.
