Keynote Opening Address featuring America’s favorite ballet dancer, Jacques d’Amboise  – Tuesday, October 13

Jacques d’Amboise started dance at the age of seven because his mother wanted to keep him out of trouble and away from the gangs that were roaming the streets. At the age of fifteen Jacques dropped out of school to dance with the New York City Ballet. By the age of seventeen he was promoted to Principal dancer of the company.

While still a Principal at the New York City Ballet d’Amboise founded the National Dance Institute to prove that arts have a unique power to engage and motivate young people. He wanted to offer a way for children to take charge of their lives and not turn to street gangs that are so present around them. Jacques said “Dance is the most immediate and accessible of the arts because it involves your own body. When you learn to move your body on a note of music, it’s exciting. You have taken control of your body and, by learning to do that, you discover that you can take control of your life.”

In his personal iife, Jacques fell in love with, and married, a beautiful dancer named Carolyn George. As the opening plenary presenter at the Dignity & Choices Symposium, Jacques will share a personal story of taking control at life’s end as he recalls Carolyn’s courageous decision to choose a peaceful death.
