Compassion & Choices was a sponsor of the 2015 Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) in Philadelphia last week. C&C representatives also connected with many of the nearly 3,000 healthcare professionals in attendance at our booth in the exhibit hall, exchanging information and sharing best practices to improve quality of life for terminally ill adults.
“Many physicians still struggle with the end-of-life process,” said National & Federal Programs Director Daniel Wilson, who attended the event. “They want to give their patients hope. But they often don’t know how to effectively communicate when there is no hope. They need to be more familiar – and comfortable – with hospice.”
Sessions and workshops at the four-day assembly covered a range of topics including goals of care, ethical decision making and understanding death-with-dignity legislation; leading author on end-of-life issues Dr. Atul Gawande was the featured plenary speaker. C&C’s presence was well received, and our unique perspective on the goals we share with the range of care providers in attendance made for engaging dialogue.
“The sense I got from some of the hospice professionals was that doctors often don’t know how to fully tell people, ‘I can’t help you;’ they are taught that medicine is the supreme healer,” explained Wilson. “We can assist in that conversation. Let’s talk about hospice. Let’s talk about palliative care. Let’s talk about what options people have and how we can get them to feel fulfilled in their final days.”
