On March 19, 2019, the Maine Death with Dignity Act (LD 1313) was introduced by Rep. Hymanson with co-sponsors Sen. Woodsome, and Representatives Bailey, Denno, Meyer, Stearns, and Senators: Gratwick and Moore. The bill received its first hearing on April 10, 2019 by the Committee on Health and Human Services. Compassion & Choices Field Director Tim Appleton testified in front of the Committee. A vote by the Committee has not yet been scheduled. We are working with the Death with Dignity National Center to pass legislation in the state.

Although Mainers overwhelmingly support medical aid in dying and the Maine Senate passed an end-of-life options bill, LD 347, in 2017, Maine’s House of Representatives did not move forward on the legislation. In 2018, a local group of Mainers launched a petition drive to place a medical aid-in-dying measure — modeled closely on Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act — on the November 2019 ballot. Signatures must be collected by January 24, 2019.

We are growing our base of action teams across the state, as they are crucial to our campaign. They lead the outreach to local officials and help train local volunteers. To join a Compassion & Choices volunteer action team in Maine click here.
