On March 4, 2024 SB280 will be heard in the House Committee on Courts of Justice.

On February 15, 2024 SB280 was referred to the House Committee on Rules. On February 23, by voice vote, the Committee referred the bill to the House Committee on Courts of Justice.

On February 13, 2024 HB858 was passed by for the day on the House floor and no further action was taken on the bill. The bill failed to pass in the House and is done for the 2024 year.

On February 9, 2024 SB 280 was voted to pass (21 -19) by the VA Senate. This bill will now go to the House committees and follow the passage process after “crossover day” on February 13.

On February 8, 2024 the Virginia House Committee on Health and Human Services voted 12-10 to move the Virginia's HB858 forward.

On February 6, 2024, the Senate Committee reported SB280 favorably  with a vote of 10-5. The bill was sent to the Senate for consideration.

On February 1, 2024 the House Committee on Health and Human Services Subcommittee on Health held a public hearing on HB858. Compassion & Choices testified in support of the legislation, along with a number of advocates. Opposition testimony was also heard. The Subcommittee reported the bill favorably to Health and Human Services with a 5-3 vote.

On January 25, 2024, the Senate Committee on Education and Health reported SB280 favorably with a vote of 8-6 with 1 abstention. The bill was rereferred to Senate Finance and Appropriations.

On January 23, 2024 the Senate Committee on Education and Health, subcommittee on Health held a public hearing on SB280. Compassion & Choices testified along with a number of advocates in support. The subcommittee voted reported the bill favorably to the Senate Committee on Education and Health.

On January 9, 2024 the House Committee on Courts of Justice, by a voice vote, referred the bill to the Health and Human Services Committee, where it was assigned to the Subcommittee on Health.

On January 10, 2024, Senator Ghazala Hashmi filed SB280 and Delegate Patrick Hope filed HB858, mirror bills that, if passed, would allow a terminally ill, mentally capable adult resident of Virginia to request a prescription from their physician that they could take to bring about a peaceful death.

SB280 was assigned to the Senate Committee on Education and Health, and we are waiting for a hearing date to be announced. HB858 was assigned to the House Committee on Courts of Justice.
