On October 11, 2019, the Wisconsin Compassionate Choices Act (SB 499) was introduced by Senators Risser, Carpenter, Miller, Larson, Smith and L. Taylor, cosponsored by Representatives Pope, Hesselbein,
Spreitzer, Milroy, Anderson, Sargent, Billings, C. Taylor, Subeck, Ohnstad and Vruwink. It was referred to Committee on Health and Human Services. A companion bill was introduced in the state house on October 18 (AB 552). Ultimately, the bill did not move or pass for the 2019-2020 session.
Compassion & Choices Midwest Regional Campaign Director stood alongside Representative Sondy Pope-Roberts (D), Representative Dianne Hesselbein (D) and Senator Fred Risser (D) on September 19, in Madison, to announce the introduction of medical aid-in-dying legislation (LRB 1624/1). Wisconsin residents Dr. Robert Sanders and Bill Baum presented their stories at the press conference.
2017
On June 23, 2017, a medical-aid-in-dying bill, S312, was introduced by State Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison) and a companion bill, HB216, was introduced by Representatives Sondy Pope (D-Cross Plains) and Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton). The bills failed to pass.
Wisconsin was one of 40 states where Compassion & Choices provided policy or technical assistance to state officials or their offices between 2017 and 2018.
