Compassion & Choices New York’s partner, Death with Dignity-Albany, will host this program featuring campaign director Corinne Carey and campaign organizer Amanda Cavanaugh. Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead Event
11 am – 12:30 pm
The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center
107 Suffolk St, New York, NY 10002
Join the Latino Commission on AIDS and Compassion & Choices New York for a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) candle-lighting ceremony in New York City on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m., to honor the memory of those passed.

We expect this event to be a beautiful celebration to remember those who endured a horrific dying process. A procession and news conference will follow the lighting of candles.

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday on the first and second day of November. It is a time when families celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed by luring them with gifts, beautiful altars and visits to their graves. The holiday is a time to embrace death as a part of the human experience in a colorful and festive celebration. It is also a very opportune time to talk about the importance of communicating with our doctors and loved ones what we want if we become too sick to speak for ourselves whether we would want to be kept ‘alive’ with aggressive medical treatments that only prolong the dying process.

While Día de Muertos originated in Mexico, the holiday has now migrated to other countries throughout the world, including the United States. People traditionally paint their faces with skull designs and dress up in bright, lively colors.

We are encouraging guests to bring an 8×10 photo of their loved ones and paint their faces with calaveras, or white skulls with colorful features, to lead a procession to an altar inside the venue to support New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act. Community Listening Session on New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act
Noon – 1:30 pm
Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square S, New York, NY 10012

Faced with a terminal diagnosis, when all options for treatment have been exhausted, New Yorkers deserve the full range of medically appropriate options for care at the end of life.

New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act (S3151/A2383) would authorize medical aid in dying for terminally ill adults with less than six months to live and found by two doctors to be mentally capable to make this medical decision. The law would give eligible patients the option to request a prescription for medication they can take to shorten a difficult, painful dying process.

Come learn about the legislation, ask questions, and learn what’s next for the medical aid-in-dying campaign in New York State.
