The campaign for a law authorizing medical aid-in-dying is fast and furious in Maryland, with the End-of-Life Option Act introduced early in the 2016 legislative session and advocates storming the statehouse to press for its passage. Buoyed by extraordinary progress in 2015 — when the bill was heard by committees in both chambers in only its first year — advocates are working hard for the bill to reach the governor’s desk this year.

More than 75 volunteers met with their lawmakers in Annapolis on Compassion & Choices Lobby Day, January 28. Bill sponsors Del. Shane Pendergrass (D-Dist. 13, Howard Co.) and Senator Ronald Young (D-Dist. 3, Frederick) introduced companion bills that day — HB0404 and SB0418. They held a packed news conference to announce their intention to see the bill advance this year. More than 55 legislators had co-sponsored the bill when it was introduced!

Co-sponsors — and more importantly, lawmakers who haven’t co-sponsored — need to hear from you now. Please click the blue box to personalize a letter to your state lawmakers telling them to support the End-of-Life-Options Act. Phone calls are even more powerful, so find your elected representatives’ contact information here.
