Compassion & Choices Sponsors 2021 State of Black Health Conference

Members of our staff and African American Leadership Council participated throughout the two-day virtual event.

Compassion & Choices was pleased to serve as a sponsor and play an active role in The Center for Black Health & Equity’s biennial State of Black Health Conference, held virtually this year March 2-3. The national event brings together public health professionals and community advocates concerned with achieving health equity for African Americans. Through panels, breakout sessions and interactive workshops, attendees are equipped with an actionable policy plan for improving Black health in their regions.Channte' Keith, director of operations for The Center for Black Health & Equity and a member of Compassion & Choices’ African American Leadership Council, hosted the event.

This year’s topics included healthcare disparities around COVID-19, gun violence, mental health and a myriad of other critical public health issues facing the Black community. National Director of Community Engagement Brandi Alexander, Community Engagement and Campaign Coordinator Wendy Minor, and National Community Engagement Manager Tony Jemison staffed a virtual booth at the conference offering downloads of Compassion & Choices’ end-of-life planning resources. Participants were also able to view videos, including the recording of our moving and informative Black History Month webinar End-of-Life Empowerment and the Faith Community. Our team also held a breakout session panel called End of Life Economic and Psychological Impact on Families.

The panel featured Brandi Alexander as moderator along with “America’s Psychologist” and Compassion & Choices supporter Dr. Jeff Gardere, and members of our African American Leadership Council including Reverend Charles McNeill, Missy Moore and Ricardo Thomas. Over 70 people participated in this session, and they had the opportunity to ask questions and download our advance care planning resources. The Center for Black Health & Equity is a national nonprofit organization committed to helping all people of African descent obtain their optimal health outcomes by addressing social, political and economic injustices that have led to deep health disparities. Compassion & Choices is proud to partner with them in our efforts to empower and educate members of the Black community about the value of end-of-life preparation, and to better advocate for themselves and their loved ones.
