CT Aid-in-Dying Campaign Director to Walk Across State with Supporters, Lawmakers to Raise Awareness of Need for Expanded End-of-Life Care Options

Step Off: Monday, Sept. 25 @ 11am, in South Windsor

Connecticut resident Tim Appleton, who has advocated for legislation that would allow terminally ill, mentally capable adults the option of medical aid in dying, will walk       across the state with supporters and lawmakers to educate the public and build support to pass the legislation in 2024.

Appleton, who is the Campaign Director for Compassion & Choices Action Network, will step off on Monday, September 25 in South Windsor. He will be joined for step off and a portion of the day by Sen. Saud Anwar, Co-Chair of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, and a key sponsor of legislation that would allow medical aid in dying.

Appleton expects to cover about 10 miles every day, six days a week, for five weeks, covering nearly 300 miles and finishing back in South Windsor. Appleton will travel through eastern Connecticut and expects to be in New London by September 30.

“However challenging this walk will be, it doesn’t compare to the intolerable suffering terminally ill Connecticut residents have endured without the option of medical aid in dying,” Appleton said. “I want to show lawmakers the extraordinary need for this peaceful dying option across the state from a wide range of people. Lawmakers should go the extra mile to pass medical aid-in-dying legislation for their constituents.”

Appleton continued, “Our message is there is a cost to legislative inaction: painful and difficult deaths that could be avoided. 2024 is the year medical aid in dying must become law.”

Compassion & Choices Action Network will post regular updates on Appleton’s progress at facebook.com/CompassionandChoicesConnecticut and CompassionAndChoices.org/Connecticut.
