Statement from Corinne Carey on New York State Bar Association’s Support for Medical Aid in Dying Act

Corinne Carey, Compassion & Choices’ Senior Campaign Director for NY/NJ issued the following statement after the New York State Bar Association’s House of Delegates voted Friday to support passage of the Medical Aid in Dying Act. A copy of the Bar Association’s press release can be found here.

“Compassion & Choices applauds the members of the New York State Bar Association and its President, Richard Lewis, for supporting passage of the Medical Aid in Dying Act. As President Lewis rightly said, ‘Support for medical aid in dying offers both dignity and compassion for those grappling with what can be a very difficult time in their lives.’

“We are grateful to Mary Beth Quaranta Morrissey, who chaired NYSBA’s Task Force on Medical Aid in Dying, which unanimously recommended support for the bill, for her diligence and commitment to ensuring that the task force heard from a wide variety of New Yorkers who are passionate about this issue.

“We are confident that NYSBA’s support – added to the overwhelming support of New York physicians and voters – will provide lawmakers with the impetus needed to pass the Medical Aid in Dying Act early this session.”
